For fathers like Joe Abraham, Illinois sanctuary state policies have led to unimaginable loss. Joe’s daughter Katie was killed just over a year ago by an illegal immigrant who was driving drunk in Urbana, Illinois; the man who killed Katie was using an alias, is unable to read or write in English or Spanish yet obtained an Illinois driver’s license, and had ignored court appearances on previous traffic violations.
Last fall “Operation Midway Blitz” was launched in Katie Abraham’s honor, and Joe remains a steadfast supporter of efforts to remove criminals here illegally as well as reform sanctuary state policies. His recent letter to Governor Pritzker identifies questions we should all be asking.
Governor Pritzker argues that Illinois must remain a sanctuary state, and has encouraged impeding efforts of federal agencies to remove illegal immigrants, demonizing agents as “jackbooted thugs.” At a local level, the Village of Wilmette has passed its own anti-ICE ordinance, restricting local law enforcement from cooperating with federal efforts including “Operation Midway Blitz.”
